Press Release from CSP
Using the Internet in American History
Booklet Announced

Spring 2000

Children's Software Press is pleased to announce the publication of our latest brochure aimed at busy teachers who want to keep up with the latest on how to integrate technology in their classroom. "Using the Internet in American History" by Birgritte Magar, Director of Online Education at Thirteen/WNET New York, takes advantage of the author's ongoing curriculum development work with classroom teachers and offers concise and practical examples for projects that can easily become part of standard American history assignments.

The booklet starts off by introducing a series of starter sites that should be on every computer used by students for history research as well as surveying other specific sites related to particular concepts/units covered in most American history courses. But this booklet is more than just another listing of great history sites. It also demonstrates how information derived from various Web sites can be used to help students think through historical issues or create projects that can easily be integrated into ongoing curriculum. Ideas for projects incorporating Web sources into lessons or projects on Communications in America, Transportation, Women's History, the Civil War, Native American history, and American Presidents are highlighted. Additional information on electronic skills such as downloading text and graphics for use in classroom materials is also included. A discussion of how the projects can be accommodated to classrooms/schools with various kinds of access to technology and the Internet makes this material useful to teachers in a variety of educational settings. A listing of resources including useful books, technology related sites, educator and student information sites, and software appears at the end of the booklet.
