Children's Software Press

While less children's software is being released, there's still a lot to keep track of -- so I'm always pleased when someone brings to my attention a software title that might have gotten put on the back burner around here by mistake. One such title is Imagynasium (Southpeak Interactive) for kids 6-12. As you know, if you read these columns with any regularity, we love software for kids that help them think of the computer as more than just a place to play games or send emails. The depth of this program is incredible -- music, story-telling, and art -- all rolled up in psychedelic graphics. Somehow, I have the feeling that kids' creating tools of the future are going to be modeled after this title. To be honest, you could probably fill a whole newsletter describing what this program can do, but if I had to sum it into just one wor it would be: invent. All the sections have structured activities, including a neat game in the Curio Shop, where kids write captions for random pictures that pop-up (great for reluctant writers). However, kids will love being able to make some of the coolest abstract creations with the various music, writing, and art tools in the free form modes of the program. Creating music in the Jingle Jungle lets kids use a range of sounds, voices, and sound effects unlike any other children's software product on the market. If you have a child who is tired of the standard fare offered by creation packages like KidPix Studio Deluxe or Magic Artist Studio, this is definitely the place to graduate to. There's so much more to experiment with here, and the only rule is to have fun!
