Children's Software Press

In the race to build bigger and better software, one genre that has always been a favorite of youngest computer users and their families has suffered a bit: storybooks. New storybook titles, in which the computer reads aloud a story generated from a CD-ROM and kids can play with interactive objects on each page, have almost disappeared. However, now Tivola is exploring the genre a bit further with great success in a new title called Max on the Moon - An Intergalatic Search for Moon Chickens (for kids ages 3 - 7). Max is a very sweet dog-like character from Newhoundland who finds he must leave the comforts of Uncle Pong's living room to fly to the moon and help his friend Mona search for moon chickens to give to the nattily dressed, but grumpy, Man on the Moon. Like other interactive storybooks, the narrator reads the text that appears on the page as kids go along. Kids can explore each page to discover animations and objects that appear with the click of the mouse. A sweet tale with childlike drawings, this would rank with the best in any print storybook counterpart. Youngest users are drawn into the tale and the task of helping Max and Mona. It's a great way to introduce the computer to little ones, a grand place to practice mouse control, and a title that can be used as a good excuse for parent and child to snuggle up in front of the computer to enjoy a tale of adventure with a little mystery thrown in. You can also use it to introduce kids to foreign languages by letting them hear in the story in French, German and Spanish.
